Team Synergy to Improve Learning Experience

WHO

Founded in 2016, Universitas Pertamina (Pertamina University) is a manifestation of PT Pertamina’s  contribution to the community with the spirit of becoming a world-class university in the fields of business and energy technology. It’s officially recognized by the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency of Republic Indonesia. PT Pertamina is an Indonesian state-owned oil and natural gas corporation based in Jakarta.

To improve learning experience, students in a capstone class, at Geophysical Engineering Department at University of Pertamina (Universitas Pertamina), Indonesia, were tasked to simulate real work challenge in an Integrated Field Exploration & Development Project or “Proyek Eksplorasi & Pengembangan Lapangan Terintegrasi” . There were 65 students working in 13 teams assigned to complete the projects, guided by 11 mentors.

THE CHALLENGE

In exploration & production project, there’s no such thing as individual contributor, you are always working in a team, even the smallest one. The team dynamics will determine to what direction the project will go. Team synergy within the students and the mentors is very important.

Face-to-face social interaction has always been the biggest part in building trust and relationship in Indonesian culture. Due to pandemic, both lecturers and students have to adapt their ways of working, teaching & learning. This sudden shift to virtual mode has resulted in significant challenges for teachers, lecturers and students. Many students are reluctant to involve themselves in group discussions and remain silent unless requested by their teachers to speak up. This situation can easily lead lecturers to make snap judgement about the students on their academic capabilities.

THE APPROACH

Indonesia’s Ministry of Education has included People literacy as the additional Learning Outcomes for Industrial 4.0. The case study is aimed to explore ways for embedding the “people literacy” aspect into the class by:

  • Providing awareness to students and lecturers on the importance of cultural intelligence and psychological safety in the global working environment
  • Providing first hands-on experience in the diagnostic process of team dynamics
  • Providing practical insights for improving the learning experience in the era of digital learning
