THE CLIENT
Sinar Mas Mining (SMM) is one of the world-largest natural resources based companies with operations in Indonesian archipelagos. It engages in the exploration, mining and marketing of thermal coal. Their coal mining concession areas are located in East, South and Central Kalimantan, Jambi and South Sumatra Basin, Indonesia. Known as a superior, trusted and high-quality coal supplier they fulfill domestic needs as well as exporting to several countries, namely India, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Spain, and other countries.
THE CHALLENGE
A company survey conducted in 2018, showed that the work safety culture at Sinar Mas Mining is considered reactive. In order to maintain a significant production growth, the company needs to re-enforce the safety culture from reactive to compliant. This change is targeted to take place gradually in less than three years.
THE APPROACH
In November 2018, together with Dr. Hendro Fujiono – a mining engineer and change management specialist who is also co-founder FujiShepherd & Associates – we designed a strategy and developed a 3-6 month plan. In order to get active participation from the staffs, we built an “army” of change agents, who will act as role models in building the safety culture in the work environment in various work areas that involves 10K + on-site staffs and 11+ contractors.
THE PROGRAM
- Assessment: To identify potential interaction gaps and support needed by key stakeholders to implement the safety program
- Skill Development Program: To up-skill the change agent team who run the safety program through workshops, using practical tools related to change management
- Implementation: To exercise new habit so that they become the second nature of leaders and their teams.
- Measure and Feedback: progress measurement and collect feedback for improvement.
THE RESULT
Changes in work safety culture are translated into simple and easy-to-understand concepts, which in turned, has empowered every stakeholders to carry it out in daily tasks. The accurate result from GlobalDisc assessment was shared and discussed together in all levels. This process has motivated everyone in building the trust and relationship among each other.
On September 2021, PT Borneo Indobara (BIB), part of SinarMas Mining Group, won the Aditama Award, the highest award for Occupational Safety in Indonesian Coal Mining Industry.
WHAT THEY SAY
THE TESTIMONY
“Working in a remote mining area means that employees are forced to interact with various people from all over the country. Safety and production are equally important in order to stay on schedule and deliver the results. As a leader, I need to manage all resources effectively and efficiently to meet the target. The most challenging part is leading people (human resources). For so many years I just used my intuition and experience in managing them, until I met Wieke and I asked her to give my team and me useful insights into understanding people better by using a tool called “Global DISC”. Since then, the team have significantly improved their self confidence and leadership skills. Even though the program is still on going, we have already proven how much progress we have made by getting and award from Mining Department for “The Best” safety Management.” – Retno Nartani, Director HSE Corporate Sinarmas Mining.
